One of the most frequently asked questions\u2014and one of those where I wish I had a crystal ball to help answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To clarify, there are indeed statistics and averages for these levels. Here\u2019s a look:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The numbers for the top levels are high and somewhat intimidating, especially when you consider that these are guided hours. These statistics are used by schools and language institutions to plan courses, create curricula, and set exams. In fact, they are the basis for graduation requirements: vocational schools aim for B1, high schools for B2, and bilingual schools for C1. If you tally up the teaching hours over a school year (around 100 hours annually), everything lines up nicely. There\u2019s even a bit extra. If you had English from, say, fifth grade through high school, you would have completed about 800-1000 hours (depending on the type of school).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So why aren\u2019t you speaking perfect English? Well, not all hours are created equal. How many of those hours were truly well-prepared and taught? And how much time and effort did you invest yourself? I think you already have your answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From what we've discussed, reaching B2-C2 levels seems distant. However, it\u2019s not as impossible as it may seem. Personally, I don\u2019t believe that nowadays it\u2019s necessary to invest 1000 hours with a tutor. Based on my experience, if you prepared reasonably well for English classes and exams, even after 5-10 years, you\u2019ll likely have around an A2 level (passive). Usually, when you restart studying, your knowledge gradually re-activates and expands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, back to the question of how many hours are needed to advance one level. Before I give numbers, let me emphasize that it\u2019s very individual and many factors come into play. Some of the most important include:<\/p>\n\n\n

Quality of the Lessons and Your Engagement<\/strong><\/h5><\/div>

There\u2019s a vast difference between a lesson built around a specific topic and grammar, where you have space to experiment with what\u2019s been presented, and a lesson where the teacher mainly talks and jumps from one topic to another, leaving you unsure of what you actually learned.<\/p><\/div><\/div>

This is crucial for making associations, linking words and phrases to specific situations, and seeing familiar things in different contexts. For example: \"mean\" = cut (cut hair, cut your finger), \"keep\" = cool (keep animals, keep on going).<\/p><\/div><\/div>

Your Overall Skill and Ability to Apply Theory into Practice<\/strong><\/h5><\/div>

Some topics will click right away, but most require thorough practice and drilling before you can use them. A good example is the present perfect tense. You might quickly understand that you need to use \"have\" + past participle and grasp that it\u2019s used for situations starting in the past and continuing to the present. But getting your brain to use it correctly in real situations is another story. Conditional sentences are another good example.<\/p><\/div><\/div>

Your Effort and Contact with the Language Outside of Class<\/strong><\/h5><\/div>

In other words, how often, how long, and how actively you work on your own. It\u2019s clear that regularly spending even just 20-30 minutes on an activity that requires full attention and maybe a bit of effort is more valuable than a quick click exercise. But even that counts. If you\u2019re choosing between doing nothing and spending 5 minutes on an app, don\u2019t waste time\u2014go for the app.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n

Other factors that may influence progress include age, the languages you already know, and your journey with them, as well as your enthusiasm and interest in different areas and grammar points. Why mention enthusiasm? Because students who can get excited about learning often pick up words and expressions much faster and progress further than those who are uninterested and sceptical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mus\u00ed ma\u0165 kontakt s jazykom mimo hod\u00edn, a to vo forme kn\u00edh, seri\u00e1lov, podcastov, alebo komunikuje s \u013eu\u010fmi, ktor\u00fdch \u00farove\u0148 je na C \u00farovni. Na dosiahnutie \u00faplne najvy\u0161\u0161ieho levelu C2 potrebujete \u010fal\u0161\u00edch 100-200 veden\u00fdch hod\u00edn a ur\u010dite to nep\u00f4jde bez kontaktu s r\u00f4znorod\u00fdm materi\u00e1lom z prakticky v\u0161etk\u00fdch oblast\u00ed \u017eivota na odbornej alebo vedecko-n\u00e1u\u010dnej \u00farovni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And one last point to consider: being a native speaker of a language doesn\u2019t necessarily mean you have a C2 or even C1 level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
